"Lily, will you marry me?" the sixteen-year-old boy asked as he slid onto his knee, looking up hopefully.
The girl he asked looked furious, surrounded by several friends, all giggling madly. "Right, Potter, since I won't date you, the obvious solution is to propose," she spat, crossing her arms.
"Aw, come on Lily!" James Potter pleaded, smiling weakly.
Lily pulled out her wand and shot her friends an angry look; they walked off, still giggling.
"Potter, get up or I swear I'll hex you."
"You know," he replied kindly, not budging, "you still haven't given me an answer yet."
"Because," she laughed, "the answer is obvious!"
"Then why don't you just say it?" he asked coolly. Lily's blush worsened. "Really, Lily, all jokes aside – why won't you just give me a chance?"
She sighed exasperatedly, putting her wand away and offering her hand to James. She pulled him to his feet.
"Tell you what, Potter. You actually get a ring, and maybe I'll consider your proposal."
"So... you'll go out with me?" he asked excitedly.
"But there's hope?"
She sighed again. "Yes, I suppose there's hope."
